Impossible to update OVI maps on N97-Nokia messed up

Postby kilgore trout » Wed Jul 29, 2009 2:13 pm

My fears about the N97 became reality today.
I tried to use Nokia maps and I got the messag that the long awaited upgrades for the app were finally ready for download; but when I tried to download it and install it on my N97 I got the message that there was'nt enough memory available for the installation.
I tried to move everything possible from "Phone memory " to "mass storage" until there was basically nothing left , but still the space available in Phone Memory was not enough.
I looked everywhere for the option to install the updates on Mass Storage instead of Phone Memory, but this option is not available, because apparently maps and its updates must be be on Phone Memory.
The problem is that Nokia released the N97 with too little free Phone Memory so that even this little (5542 Kb) update has no place on Nokia's supposed flagship phone.

Is it possible that an experienced company like Nokia made such a blunder on their best device?
But specially is there anyone who can suggest a way around this problem?

Hi, I have the same issue but can get the update
If you remove all the apps that are free in ovi store and re-install them, It lets you put them in the mass memory
So far I have transferred about 10 apps and gained 13mb of space.
Will be happy when I get to about 30mb out of the 73mb.

I already did that , whithout uninstall them I just moved as much as I could to the mass memory and then erased the all files in phone memory, there are back only things that I do not dare to move or to erase because I don't know what they are .
I have 8,7 Mb free but it doesnt let me install a 2 mb update to Nokia maps becaus it says there's no space enough.
I think this is a freaking bad joke.
My phone is 2 weeks old and already cant receive any more updates?
I'm seriously thinking of bringing the phone back in time to get a full refound even if I like it in every other aspect.
This is major construction blunder, even worse than putting a piece of hard plastic in top of the camera lens.
Do you think hat the "devicescape " folder (full of wierd files) can be moved to mass memory?
And The file "System"? (inside there are only unlock codes for quick office) would you move that?

As suggested above you can free up phone memory by removing rarely used pre-installed apps & if needed re-install them to mass storage (check you have the install available first).

A hard reset (press & hold shift, spacebar & backspace whilst turning on phone) will put the phone to factory out of box state. Remember to back up first.

Finally if needed, using a vanilla product code to unbrand the phone will leave it with fewer apps installed in phone memory & give you access to latest updates (phone providers often hold back updates on phones branded to them). Note this invariably requires a hard reset to get phone to boot again.

Note that v 2.0 firmware is due out early October which promises more free phone memory, kinetic scrolling & integrated VOIP app (hopefully to work with Skype) to name but a few improvements.
